Oilers lose to Capitals

The Oilers collapsed under the immense pressure of the high-flying Washington Capitals during the third period.  Not surprisingly, the third period was the Alexander Ovechkin show.  I did manage to catch part of this game while at a Christmas party last night, but I don't have any insights other than to agree with Jonathan Willis and David Staples that this just isn't a very good hockey team.  I guess that's a little bit of stating the obvious for a team clinging to 14th in the West.  Deslauriers had some highlight reel saves early on then got beat on a bad wrap around, on high shots, and not-so-great rebound control which have been problems for him previously.  Not to place the blame on Deslauriers, but when a team gives up 42 shots against a team like the Capitals, you're going to need outstanding goaltending to win.

With the game tied and the Oilers somehow finding away to kill the 3v5 penalty, there was a glimmer of hope that this game might go to extra minutes, but what seemed inevitable ended up happening.

I watched the game and while exciting, it ended up not being very close. Deslauriers stood on his head for two periods but the Capitals were all over them all game. Stortini was pretty good, as was Smid.

Hey Jonathan, I didn't watch quite enough to get a sense of who played well for the Oilers. There were a crazy number of a giveaways by the Oilers.

Dude, Deslauriers is absolutely legit. He was stout for his team, and did just about everything to put them in a position to win. Sometimes you just can't stop AO, but Deslauriers deserves a ton of credit, and this is coming from a Caps fan.

Hey the Miz, thanks for your thoughts. It's always cool to get the perspective of another team's fan.

I missed most of the game, but it did look like Deslauriers was pretty solid early in the game. With the number of shots AO had during the game and the third period in particular, it was hard to expect a different result for the Oilers.

For the most part, Deslauriers' has been giving the Oilers at least a chance to win most games which is as much as you can expect from a goalie with limited NHL experience.
