Ladislav Smid scores game-winning-goal for the St. Louis Blues

The Oilers collapsed during the second period to allow the Blues to score 4 unanswered power play goals during the final two periods of play.  Heading into this game, the Blues had the second worst power play unit in the entire league.  Deven Dubnyk allowed seven goals in just 26 shots for a .731 save percentage on the night.  Six of the first goals came on the first 15 shots during the game.  To be fair, at least four of the first six were not his fault especially the third St. Louis goal of the game which Ladislav Smid banged in to beat his own goalie on the five-hole.

For Dubnyk, it's his second back-to-back game allowing seven goals against including his recent loss for the Springfield Falcons.  Tonight was his NHL debut as a starting goaltender, it's hard not to feel bad for the kid.

The Oilers give up 2 points to a team that really didn't look that great during this game.  For the first period and a half, the Oilers were tied 2-2 after out shooting the Blues.  Midway through the second period, the Blues had registered just seven shots on net against the Oilers.  Sam Gagner banged in a rebound from Andrew Cogliano's shot to score the first Oilers goal.  For the second, Dustin Penner scored following a sequence of hard work behind the Blues net with the help of Shawn Horcoff.

Overall, the Oilers were playing a pretty solid game with the exception being the weak play of their fourth line centered by Stortini with Jacques and O'Sullivan on the wings.  Andrew Cogliano looked at times like he came back to life in playing with Sam Gagner.  The Oilers top unit wasn't looking great, but was getting the job done.

Just over 13 minutes into the second frame, Sheldon Souray took an undisciplined roughing penalty and went to the box.  From there, all hell broke loose for the Oilers.  On the ensuing Blues' power play, Ladislav Smid banged in an own goal when the puck came across the crease.  If you have any idea what was going on in his mind, your guess is better than mine.

The Oilers beleaguered penalty kill got lit up three more times.  The Oilers have now lost four consecutive games on home ice and remain on the floor of the Western Conference.  Tonight, both special teams were absolutely horrible for the Oilers.

If you count today's game vs the Wild, that's 5 straight power play goals against. Not good... smilies/cry.gif
