Oilers vs Rangers

Edmonton Oilers vs. New York Rangers game - November 5th, 2009 - Game 16

New York Ranger 4 - Oilers 2

The Edmonton Oilers(7-7-1) will be hosting the New York Rangers (9-6-1) tonight at Rexall Place.  The game time is 7:30 pm and will be available on PPV.  The Edmonton Oilers are currently in the middle of slump with just one win in the past six games.  Shawn Horcoff, the Oilers top center, is out with a shoulder injury.  Mike Comrie in contrast will be returning to the lineup after suffering from the impact of the flu as well as asthma.

Pregame Analysis:

28.0 S/G 25.1
29.9 SA/G 33.9
48.2 FO% 46.7

By the numbers, the Rangers and Oilers have fairly similar stats for faceoffs, and special teams except witht the Rangers superior penalty kill.  The New York Rangers had the best penalty kill in the entire league last year.  The Oiles have a negative goal differential and have been struggling to put the puck in the net with three shutout losses in their past six games.  As well, the Oilers themselves only managed to score one goal in their recent game vs. the New York Islanders.

The Money Line:

Not surprisingly the money line currently favors the New York Rangers giving them the slight edge at (-120/+100)

Edmonton Oilers Projected lineup:

  • Steve Staios will return tonight after recovering from a concussion injury
  • Mike Comrie is back in the lineup from the flu.
  • JF Jacques and Ladislav Smid missed the pregame skate today.
  • Shawn Horcoff is out for at least 7-10 days with a shoulder injury

Penner – Gagner – Hemsky

Comrie – O’Sullivan – Nilsson
Moreau – Cogliano – Pisani
MacIntyre– Brule – Stortini

Grebeshkov – Gilbert
Chorney – Visnovsky
Strudwick – Staios

Khabibulin
Deslauriers

New York Rangers Projected lineup:

Prospal – Anisimov – Gaborik
Avery – Dubinsky – Callahan
Higgins – Boyle – Voros
Byers – Drury – Kotalik

Girardi – Staal
Redden – Gilroy
Del Zotto – Rozsival

Valiquette

Lundqvist

Update from TSN:

Accoriding to TSN, both JF Jacques and Ladislav Smid will be out of the Oilers' lineup tonight with the flu.  However, I've found some unconfirmed sources that suggest that Jacques might be going for an MRI for his back--relating to his previous back injury.  Note, the JF Jacques back injury is still unconfirmed.

Period 1 - New York 1 / Edmonton 0

  • Overall, the Oilers have played a decent period with a little more jump--still couldn't find a clear shooting lane if it kicked them in the ass.
  • The Moreau/Cogliano/Pisani line's done an effective job at getting pressure down low.
  • The Oilers had 3 power plays and failed to score a goal.  The Rangers had a powerplay early in the game with the penalty going to Steve MacIntyre (tripping in offensive zone).
  • Even with 3 powerplays, the Oilers only have 8 shots total.  Stuck in the perimeter without able to setup a good shot.  Tried to pass it into net until passes got broken up.
  • No one talks about how fast Visnovsky is but, he outstaked Marion Gaborik tonight which says a ton!
  • Shot clock:  NYR 14-Edm 8
  • Period Pylons:  Staios / Chorney / Strudwick all got pyloned pretty bad.
  • Hemsky's played well / Comrie's sluggish but has had chances.
  • Higgins scored for NYR.
  • Bulin's been pretty sharp and made 2 big saves against Gaborik.

Pat Quinn was mentioned on the PPV:

Our offense comes from our defense and our defense sucks.

Period 2 - Rangers 3 - Oilers 1

  • The Oilers allowed two Rangers powerplay goals this period.  First goal nice play from Kotalik to Del Zotto to Callahan.  The second goal was a beautiful pass from Marian Gaborik to Kotalik for the wide open net on the cross ice pass.
  • Khabibulin's been solid, but he's faced a ton of scoring chances.
  • Visnovsky scored to initially make it a 2-1 game with a nice backhand shot after walking in from the blueline.
  • The Oilers had some bad luck including a Ranger knocking the net off it's morings without getting a penalty.
  • Comrie made a nice feed to Stortini who fanned on the shot missing the wide open side of the net.
  • Penner had a pretty good scoring chance with a slapshot from the slot that was stopped by Valiquette.
  • With the score at 2-1, Pisani went to the box for a holding call in the NYR zone.

Period 3

  • Fernando Pisani went to the box for 4 minutes on a high sticking call in the offensive zone.
  • Gaborik potted a rebound at the side of the net to make the game 4-1.
  • Penner had a short handed chance but was stopped by Valiquette.
  • Gagner had a nice chance in front that was also saved.
  • Comrie scored with a goal mouth goal to make the game 4-2 Rangers.
  • Moreau took a penalty in the offensive zone for interference.
  • Shot totals 39-29 favoring the Rangers.

Post game thoughts:

  • The Oilers have lost their third striaght game in a row (one win in 7 games).  Dustin Penner is kept off the score sheet again.
  • The Rangers managed to connect with 3 powerplay goals after not having scored one in four games.  Cleary, the Oilers penalty kill has been struggling with allowing 3 powerplay goals against.
  • Khabibulin was solid in net despite the 4 goals against.
  • Overall, the Oilers were heavily out shot 39-29 and that trend continues.
  • Penenr, Gagner, and Hemsky were each dangerous at times, but couldn't get one in.
  • Gaborik?  Well Gaborik's Gaborik, so not much to say there.  The PPV annoucners did mention that he's hanging with Jay-Z, and a few other celebrities now that he lives in Manahattan.

Well, this game's a difficult one to pin down.  Horcoff's out and we allow 3 powerplay goals against, so there might be a connection there.  The Oilers took a litany of offensive zone penalties which probably tilted the game.  Either way, there's no quesiton that they lost to a better hockey team.

Moreau and Staios are two players which the game has passed them by.  Did I mention we've got them locked up through next season at a combined cap hit of $4.7 million dollars.  No question, but there's no value there.  Kick in Pisani's $2.5 million cap hit and now we're talking $7.2 million in cap space which doesn't help things.

Moreau, Pisani, and MacIntyre did contribute on what stat in tonight's game.  10 minutes in penatly time all taken in the offensive zone.

12 and 33 no ice time in the third. You gotta think that is the end of both of them. Im sure liam reddox and chris minard are better options than those two...

Kris, I can't figure out why we've kept Steve MacIntyre on the roster from prior to the season starting and especially now. He played a 1:24 in the entire game which is par for the course.

Having a "nuclear deterrent" who's good for a minute per game makes absolutely no sense to me when we can barely put 4 lines together.

I haven't checked in a while, but last time I did, Reddox was off to a brutal start this year in the AHL. I am not sure how Minard's doing, but I will take a look.

That penalty in the last 5 minutes by moreu in the offensive zone was so incredibly useless and stupid that my jaw dropped. I cant believe this guy still has a job...
Minard is like 6th in AHL scoring, and is a big body at 6'2 212. Hes pretty much a career minor leaguer (hes already 27) but hes gotta be more effective than bobby nilsson or the captainsuckalot

Hey Kristopher,

Yeah, Moreau's mostly taken offensive zone penalties this year which is pretty frustrating to watch. Overall, there were several penalties in the offensive zone during this game.

Minard's a good thought, but I think that he's had a recent concussion injury.
