| Mike Comrie, an Edmonton Oiler, recently diagnosed with Mononuceosis - "Mono"- November 18, 2009.
Mike Comrie, an Edmonton Oiler and boyfriend of Hilary Duff, has a confirmed diagnosis of 'Mono' or 'mononucleosis.' Dan Tencer recently reported this news just hours ago: Dan Tencer. At this point in time, the Edmonton Oilers' website simply lists Mike Comrie as out indefinitely due to "illness." In more common parlance, mononucleosis is often referred to as the "kissing disease" in part because it can be spread through saliva. For Edmonton Oiler fans, this is particularly bad news as Mike Comrie will have to avoid contact sports to avoid the risk of injuring his spleen. Prior to last night's game vs the Colorado Avalanche, Comrie was out of the lineup and had gone for blood work. From Dan Tencer's Twitter: Mike Comrie has mono. Official today. Why is everybody more concerned about Hilary Duff? Oh...yeah...ok, I figured it out. Mononucleosis Mononucleosis: - Mono is caused by the Epstein-Barr Virus and usually transmitted by saliva, mucous from the nose or throat, and occasionally spread by tears. Since it's often spread by saliva, it's commonly referred to as the "kissing disease."
- Who gets infected? Mono is most commonly contracted by people during the ages of 10-24. Mike Comrie's older than the typical age group of those who contract this virus.
- Diagnosis: by blood work (monospot test) and epstein-barr virus
- Most common symptoms of Mono:
- High fever
- Sore Throat
- Swollen glands /tonsil (in neck)
- Weakness
- Fatigue
- ***Can cause the spleen to swell
- It's often advised that people who contract mono avoid contact sports for at least 4 weeks or until approved by their physician due to the risk of a ruptured spleen.
How long will Mike Comrie be out of the lineup? As previously mentioned, the Oilers website currently lists Mike Comrie to be out indefinitely. Based on the information from WebMD, it sounds like Comrie will be out for at least the next four weeks. To make matters worse, Mike Comrie has asthma. For the Edmonton Oilers, this is just one more unfortunate player to be added to the long list of those out due to injuries/illness. Already, the Oilers have had an inordinately high number of man games lost due to injuries or the flu (including H1N1). It definitely seems like there's a black cloud hanging over Rexall Place this season.
