| The Oilers win! 5-3 vs. Colorado Avalanche. No Hemsky... No Horcoff... No Souray... No Smid... No problem! Reddox/Potulny were called up... First period: The Oilers came out shooting first and asking questions later for a change. Overall, the Oilers were making crisp passes and firing rubber at Anderson. During this period, we initially saw some of the residual problems of the Oilers. For example, Nilsson's still tried to make passes that just weren't there and the end result included some turnovers. As well, Patrick O'Sullivan still maintained his knack for whipping pucks at shin pads. Gagner set up Comrie for the first powerplay goal. Gagner's pass was blocked but it bounced onto Comrie's stick in front of the net. The commentator noted that Comrie's the "cookie monster" and he doesn't miss too many of those. Colorado answered back to even the game at one-one with Svatos back out of the box and just after the Avalanche powerplay ended. The Oilers unit were hemmed in their zone. If you watch the highlight reel, you'll see Chorney alone in front of Bulin watching Svatos about 8 feet away firing the puck in the net. For the Oilers second power play goal Nilsson made a pass from behind the oppostion onto Gilbert's stick and he fired a wrist shot with a nice screen from Potulny that beat Anderson. The Avs showed tons of speed on the wing and at times they were just too fast for Strudwick and Chorney, but Bulin made a number of great saves. Every time you heard the names, Stasny or Jones, bad things were usually happening in the Oilers' zone. Penner notched the 3rd power play goal of this period with a beautiful feed from O'Sulilvan into the slot. Second Period: The Oilers seemed to lose steam and were heavily outshot during this period. The only goal this period came from Hensick who fired a shot from the point. The puck looked to bounce off a few players to wind up in net. Chorney again was on the ice providing a pretty good screen against Bulin. The puck might have deflected off his leg, but I would have to check the replay. Colorado managed to get away with a fair amount of obstruction during this period. Prior to this game, the last game that I watched was the Calgary / Rangers game. During the Rangers game, they seemed to call most of the obstruction that occurs when a winger without the puck is blocked from entering the offensive zone. Penner's size works against him in terms of drawing penalties against. Adam Foote had a pretty good hold on him in front of Anderson, but no call was made. Third Period: The Oilers got another nice powerplay goal this time from Potulny. I am guessing that most of the teams in the NHL have the book on Hemsky's cross-ice pass to Visnovsky moving up in the high slot, so maybe having some new players on our powerplay made it less predictable. Potulny himself got his second point of the night. Colorado came back into the game with another goal from David Jones who put the puck in Khabibulin's locker. Chorney made a no looker pass to Visnovsky behind his net. Chorney played hot-potato with the puck and instead of carrying it around his net with no one forechecking him, he dished it back and it was intercepted. Cogliano got the insurance goal in the third period with some good work from Liam Reddox. Random thoughts: The Oilers scored 4 powerplay goals during the game even with the absence of Hemsky, Souray, and Horcoff which was pretty surprising. As well, the Oilers PK didn't allow a single goal against. Pisani and Reddox looked like a pretty good tandem on the PK especially. Penner notched two points on the night and continues his excellent point production. He also played very well on the PK as usual. Overall, Reddox played a pretty smart game without making any errors or giveaways (like Nilsson/Moreau). Potulny had a pretty remarkable night with contributions including a goal and a helper himself. Comrie got his usual goal mouth goal, but hey that's what he's here for. Chorney had a pretty unfortunate night being the only Oiler to finish the night at a minus 3. He made mistakes to varying degrees which contribute to each of those goals against. Overall, Steady Steve was actually looking pretty steady once again. He also has the only hard slapshot from the point with Souray out. As well, he made some smart veteran plays that prevented goals. At one point, he managed to knock the net off its moorings to prevent a potential goal. He also blocked a few nice shots with one hitting him square in the stomach. Overall, it was a great effort from Khabibulin and the rest of this team to pull off a win in Colorado.
