Oilers recall Arsene According the the Edmonton Oilers website, they've recalled defenseman Dean Arsene from their AHL affiliate, The Springfield Falcons. For the 29 year-old Dean Arsene, this will be his first opportunity to play in the NHL. Dean is listed as 6'2" and 200 lbs. What's interesting is that the Oilers did not recall defenseman Theo Peckham and instead chose Arsene. Secondly, this recent news suggests that Sheldon Souray might not be ready to play during Sunday's game vs. Atlanta. Edmonton Oilers injured defensemen: In the recent game vs. the Buffalo Sabres, Dennis Grebeshkov incurred a medial collateral ligament (MCL) injury in a knee on knee collision with Derek Roy. Prior to that, Taylor Chorney suffered a high ankle sprain during the Oilers 5-3 win over the Colorado Avalanche. Lastly, defenseman Sheldon Souray has been out with a concussion injury since the Oilers third game of this season. Previously, the Oilers had recalled defenseman, Theo Peckham, who struggled in his Oilers debut this season. Dean Arsene signed a 1 year, 2-way contract with the Edmonton Oilers organization in July of this year. At the time, he offered the following quotes in his reaction: "I talked to [Bears president-GM] Doug [Yingst] before I left," Arsene said. "He said he wanted to have me back. I was honest with him. I said I would love to be back, but it has to be an NHL contract. I wanted to get my chance, like everybody else. "I don't know if it's so much to stick in Edmonton right off the hop. I think it's more of a depth-player signing. I'm going to go down to Springfield and play as well as I can to be the first to be called up. I don't have stars in my eyes to think I'm going to stick out of camp." Lowetide's reaction to the signing at the time: So who is this fellow, anyway? Based on the comments about him as he heads out of Hershey, I'd say the Oilers got an exceptional character player Dean Arsene's AHL stats: - 2009 - GP 16, G0,A2, P2, +/- +4, PIM 31
- 2008 - GP 46, G1, A10, P11, +/- +8, PIM 99 [Hershey Bears]
AHL Quality of Competition: Previously this summer, Jonathan Willis and Gabriel Desjardins collaborated on a projected that involved calculating AHL quality of compeition that players have faced. Here's the ranking of quality of competition faced by the Oilers AHL defensemen last season (note Dean Arsene played for the Hershey Bears last year). - Theo Peckham: .286
- Taylor Chorney: .279
- Mathieu Roy: .275
- Cody Wild: .274
- Bryan Young: .266
- *Dean Arsene: .264
- Ryan Constant: .262
- Rob Bina: .259
- Mike Gabinet: .254
- Sebastien Bisaillon: .245
Jonathan Willis include this note: I'm hesitant to put Arsene this low in the rankings; it's always a little perilous to compare guys across teams and anecdotal evidence would suggest that he should be in the group right after Peckham.
