Edmonton Oilers vs. Ottawa Senators - November 10, 2009.  PPV.

The Springfield Falcons Edmonton Oilers (8-8-1) will face the Ottawa Senators (7-5-2) at ScotiaBank Place today.  From recent reports, it sounds like Shawn Horcoff, Sheldon Souray, Ales Hemsky, Ryan Stone, JF Jacques, Robert Nilsson, and Taylor Chorney won't be in the lineup.

Pre-game info:

The Oilers have added to their list of injured players with a possible concussion injury to Robert Nilsson and a sprained ankle (Taylor Chorney) which occurred in the recent game vs. the Colorado Avalanche.  As well, the Oilers recently placed Steve MacIntyre on waivers.  The Oilers themselves have won just two games in the last seven.

Ryan O'Marra

Update:  Oilers recall Ryan O'Marra from the AHL!!!  Jeff Deslauriers will get the start in net.  Ryan O'Marra's currently listed at 6'2" / 207lbs.  He was a 1st round draft pick in the 2005 entry draft at 15th (NYI).  Not surprisingly, Jonathan Willis has a great article on Ryan O'Marra which was written in January, 2009.

Oilers vs Senators

Goalie 2 Brian Elliott

Period 1 - Oilers 2 / Senators 1

  • Staios scored the first goal of the game with assists going to Dustin Penner and Patrick O'Sullivan.  Penner overpowered the Senator dman in front of the net for the screen.
  • The Oilers were sloppy at times in their zone.  Michaelek missed on the open net by hitting the post.  He had about 4 feet of open net.
  • Lubomir Visnovsky made an uncharacteristic error in his zone which lead to Ottawa's first goal.  No idea why, but he was slowing skating around his net with the puck while Kovalev came along and stole the puck on the forecheck and passed it out in front to Cheechoo for a gift of a goal.
  • Ethan Moreau scored the second goal of the game unassisted with a hard forecheck from his line.
  • Shot totals are 9-8 in favor of the Oilers.
  • No penalties so far in this game.

Period 2 - Oilers 2 / Senators 2

  • The only goal during this period was from Nick Foglino after the Oilers were hemmed in their zone.
  • The Oilers outshot the Senators 15-6 and Leclaire made a few good stops.
  • Visnovsky had another uncharacteristic give away in his zone making a tape to tape pass to a Senator in the slot.  He managed to recover the puck and prevent a scoring chance.
  • Ryan O'Marra's been busy making some decent hits during this period.
  • The Oilers had the only powerplay during this period.  Despite controlling the puck in the Senators' zone during much of the powerplay, they were unable to find the back of the net.

Period 3 - Oilers 3 / Ottawa 3

  • Overall, great effort from the Oilers who played far better defensively and managed more shots.
  • Leclaire stoned Cogliano on a breakaway.  He also stoned Grebeshkov who made a nice deek move walking from the point.  Lastly, he stoned Penner on the cross-crease pass.
  • Great play by Leclaire to keep the Sens in the game
  • Neil scored a pretty dirty goal while tackling Deslauriers.
  • Brule evened up the game with five minutes left in regulation.
  • Cogliano had a pretty good game overall.
  • Deslauriers had some trouble handling the puck behind his net this game.
  • shots 34-25 in favor of the Oilers.
  • Overall, one of the more exciting games this season.

Overtime

  • Scoreless, but Penner was stoned again on a redirect by LeClaire.

Post Game Summary:

Oilers lose in shootout.

  • O'Sullivan beat LeClaire with his quick release shot.  Penner and Comrie were stopped by LeClaire.
  • Deslauriers didn't look very sharp in the shootout and was beat like a rented mule by two senators--Spezza and Kovalav. He did make a stop from Alredsson's attempt.
  • With Deslauriers in net and many key players out of the lineup, the Oilers were fortunate to get the point even if they out-played the Sens.

1/4 of our forwards are from the AHL. At least we know these guys will play hard and won't take anything for granted.

Hey Horpensky,

Yeah, the list of Oilers injuries is getting out of control. Ottawa's a pretty good hockey team and it will be hard to keep winning on the road when so many of our better players won't be playing.
