| 2010 Olympics - Team Canada Olympic Hockey Team - Roster evaluation forward skaters. The date for Team Canada to make a decision for its Olympic hockey team roster is fast approaching. Consequently, I thought that I would take a look at the players who were invited to Team Canada's Olympic hockey team camp in terms of their boxcar statistics. Of note, Eric Staal of the Carolina Hurricanes is currently not playing due to an upper body injury. Flyers' Simon Gagne himself will be out for the next 6-8 weeks following abdominal surgery. Milan Lucic is also on the Boston Bruins' injury reserve. LIST OF FORWARD SKATERS INVITED TO TEAM CANADA'S OLYMPIC HOCKEY CAMP: Sidney Crosby, Shane Doan, Simon Gagné, Dany F Heatley, Jarome Iginla, Rick Nash, Joe Sakic, Martin St-Louis, Eric Staal, Joe Thornton, Vincent Lecavalier, Ryan Smyth, Jeff Carter, Ryan Getzlaf, Milan Lucic, Patrick Marleau, Andy McDonald, Brenden Morrow, Corey Perry, Michael Richards, Derek Roy, Patrick Sharp, Jordan Staal, Jonathan Toews, Dan Cleary, Jason Spezza. While boxcar stats do not offer a comprehensive picture of how these players have started this season, they do offer some indication of who's hot and who's not. Granter, there's also other aspects to consider when making a decision on Team Canada's roster than simple point production as we're not looking to build four one-dimensional scoring lines. Dustin Penner of the Edmonton Oilers is starting to garner attention and perhaps some consideration as a player for Team Canada's Olympic hockey team. For Oiler's fans, the possibility of this is not a surprise. Dustin Penner's been the most dominant player on the Oilers team this year and in many games, the most dominant player on the ice. In last night's game vs. the Ottawa Senators, Dustin Penner scored a goal and probably created more scoring chances than any player on either team. If there is a case to be made for Dustin Penner, it's not only that he's red hot in terms of his point production or that he is ahead of any of the other prospective players for Team Canada in terms of his +/-, it's that Dustin Penner is versatile. Versatile? Already this year, Dustin Penner has shown tremendous ability to play well with anyone on his team. His 22 points in 18 games haven't come from playing alongside Ryan Clowe and Joe Thornton. Further, Dustin Penner's been one of the top penalty killers in the league while still producing points that currently put him top 10 in the league (currently tied for 4rth in points). Here's the list of forward skaters who were invited to Team Canada's Olympic Hockey camp (with Penner thrown in for comparison)

Other guys that weren't at camp are making waves too. Stamkos is turning heads, and Lecavlalier is most likely cut already (they said the list has been trimmed down significantly).
Also on a lot of people's team Canada's, I always see Smyth left off. I don't know why, but for some reason he's being overlooked a lot.
