Flyer, Darroll Powe, takes a high-sticking penalty late in 3rd period

The Philadelphia Flyers lost to the Edmonton Oilers late in the 3rd period with just 17 seconds left in the game.  Darroll Powe took a high-sticking penalty drawn by Sam Gagner with a minute and fifty seconds remaining in regulation.  Jeff Deslauriers earned his shut out with 33 saves on the night.  Fourteen of which were in the first period alone.

With the Carolina Hurricanes losing to the Calgary Flames by a score of 4-1 tonight, the Oilers are now just 3 points behind the Canes and five points behind the Leafs.  Should this streak continue, the Oilers could be at risk of losing their top 2 pick for Taylor Hall or Tyler Seguin.

Ethan Moreau's name came up as an Oiler would will likely be traded prior to the deadline.  I think this might be a mistake given how effective he's been stewarding the Oilers towards the Fall 4 Hall.  In other NHL trade rumors, Ilya Kovalchuk should be traded before he plays his next game on Friday.

From watching the game on TSN, it looked like attendance at Rexall Place was surprisingly good for this game.  Perhaps the Flyers are a bigger draw than I anticipated or fans just couldn't resist the opportunity to boo Chris Pronger every time he touched the puck.  There's no question that Pronger was booed every single time he had the puck tonight.

For the most part, it was a fairly boring and uneventful game especially given the lack of scoring.  Ethan Moreau missed an opportunity to score late in the third when he hit Shawn Horcoff in the ass with a shot.  Ray Ferraro couldn't believe that he missed on that opportunity and wasn't afraid to comment about it.

The Oilers were outshot 33-27 and were probably out-played for much of the game.  Alex Plante and Taylor Chorney both played fairly decent games for the Oilers.  Well, with the exception of Plante's bad luck in taking a delay of game penalty late in the third period.  Both Robert Nilsson and Fernando Pisani were healthy scratches for the game.

Ryan Potulny scored the Oilers game-winning-goal on the power play at the back door with on nice sequence involving Sam Gagner and Dustin Penner.  Watching the Oilers win this game feels somewhat like a guilty pleasure.  Short-term gain for long-term pain?  At this point, I would hate to see the Oilers lose the opportunity to draft either one of Tyler Seguin or Taylor Hall.

Godot10:

Don't fret losing Seguin.

The Oilers are just beating crappy eastern conference teams. We go back to playing Western Conference teams tomorrow.

Kris:

From a pure entertainment point of view, that was a terrible hockey game.

And if Philly is a good team -on paper they seem solid- they sure didn't show it tonight.

something special

Schitzo:

Boy, that Cam Fowler had better be something special.
