Nikolai Khabibulin Arrested in Arizona

Edmonton Oiler, Nikolai Khabibulin, was charged with driving under the influence after being pulled over for speeding.  Though he was arrested on February 8th, the news of this charge didn't surface until it was reported by an Arizona blog:  Khabibulin Arrested.  For the Edmonton Oilers organization, it's another PR nightmare following the incident at the Osteria de Medici restaurant on New Years Eve.

Khabibulin, 37,  had season ending back surgery on a herniated disc on January 14, hadn't played for the Oilers since November 16th, 2009.  This past summer, Oilers GM, Steve Tambellini signed Khabibulin to a 4-year contract worth $15 million dollars.

According to reports, Khabibulin consented to both a Field Sobriety Test along with a blood test to determine his blood alcohol levels.  He failed the Field Sobriety Test and was cited with a blood alcohol level of .08 or more along with speeding charges.

Nikolai Khabibulin answered that he was pulled over due to "speed" according to the Police report (PDF warning).  His Ferrari was clocked at 70 mph in a 45 mph zone.

Not Khabibulin's actual Ferrari...

Again, according to reports, Khabibulin was pulled over while driving a black Ferrari though the actual model/year was not released.  After being arrested, Khabibulin was apparently also unable to provide the Police with proof of insurance.  He is set to appear before a judge in an Arizona court on February 26th.

Already, I'm sure that jokes about Rehabulin have surfaced over the Internet.  Getting a DUI while driving a Ferrari and missing games due to a back injury certainly is the perfect confluence of circumstances for some seriously bad PR for Khabibulin.  What are your thoughts on this issue?

I just heard on CTV News that first time convictions in the state of Arizona involve a mandatory 10 day sentence. Pretty crazy stuff...

Hey DTS, I hard the same things several times today. That's pretty harsh for Khabibulin. 10 days in the grey bar hotel in Arizona can't be good for a bad back. :P
