Game 1 Recap:  Team Canada defeats Team Norway 8-0 at the 2010 Olympics - Mens Olympic Hockey

Team Canada's men's Olympic Hockey team defeated Team Norway by a score of 8-0 in a dominating performance tonight at Canada Hockey Place in Vancouver.  Jarome Iginla lead Team Canada with a hat trick on the night.  After a surprising scoreless end to the first period, Team Canada opened the flood gates with a power play goal from Jarome Iginla in the second period and the team itself never looked back.

It never ceases to amaze me about the unifying ability of the red maple leaf on a hockey jersey.  Issues such as Heatley not wanting to waive a no-trade clause, Jarome Iginla giving Sheldon Souray a concussion, or even Roberto Luongo just being Luongo are all forgotten when these players step on the ice for Team Canada.

After an uneventful first period, Steve Yzerman and his coaching staff made changes to Team Canada's lines which helped to create some chemistry.  In particular, moving Jarome Iginla up to Crosby's right wing helped get things moving.

first_period

For the first period of the game, it was all about trying to find line chemistry for Team Canada.  The period itself was scoreless, but Team Canda outshot Team Norway 14-7.

Team Canada used Patrice Bergeron and Jonathan Toews along with Chris Pronger and Dan Boyle as one of their first penalty kill units.  Later, the first power play unit which changed throughout the game consisted of Rick Nash, Sidney Crosby, and Mike Richards with Dan Boyle and Shea Weber on defense.  The second power play unit in this period included the Shark line of Dany Heatley, Patrick Marleau, and Joe Thornton with Chris Pronger and Drew Doughty on defense.

During the game, they noted that Team Norway's goaltender, Grotnes, actually has a day job in Norway as a carpenter.  For the first period at least, he looked very solid including robbing Sidney Crosby with a quick glove hand.

second_period

Team Canada provided a dominating performance against Team Norway in the second period scoring three unanswered goals.  Jarome Iginla opened the scoring on the power play with a quick shot from deep in the slot.  Sidney Crosby and Drew Doughty both assisted on the goal with the screen provided by Rick Nash.

Dany Heatley tipped in a shot by Chris Pronger from the point for the team's second goal of the game.  Joe Thornton found an open cross-ice seam to the point to set up the shot by Pronger.  Pronger wisely aimed the shot wide of the net at Heatley's stick to set up the deflection.

Mike Richards banged in his own rebound for a greasy goal to make the score 3-0.  Eric Staal had just stepped out of the penalty box, so it wasn't a short-handed goal.  Patrice Bergeron and Shea Weber assisted on the goal.

By the end of the second period, Team Canada had outshot Team Norway 30-13.  In the second period alone, Team Canada lead with 16 shots to 6.

third_period

During the third period, Team Canada steamrolled Norway with another five unanswered goals.  Team Norway had a few chances including one where Luongo stoned Patrick Thoreson who had two chances including his own rebound from the goal mouth.

Ryan Getzlaf scored on a delayed penalty with six attachers for Team Canada on the ice.  Initially, he missed by hitting the post but made no mistake with a spinning backhand shot from the slot.

Team Norway changed their goalie after this goal with the score at 4-0 in favor of Team Canada.  André Lysenstøen relieved Pål Grotnes.

The San Jose Sharks intact line of Dany Heatley, Patrick Marleau, and Joe Thornton was worth every penny in this game.  They were used on many of Team Canada's power plays including Dany Heatley's power play goal to make the score 5-0.  This goals was assisted by Patrick Marleau and Dan Boyle.

Shortly thereafter, Jarome Iginla scored his second goal of the game which was assisted by Sidney Crosby and Rick Nash.  It was an abosultely sick display of tape to tape to tape to tape... passing.  Two goals on the night for the Heater.

Cory Perry scored Canada's seven goal on a play set up and assisted by Dan Boyle.  Eric Staal also assisted on the goal.

Finally, Rick Nash fired a wrist shot from the point that was deflected by Jarome Iginla giving Iginla a hat trick.  At GM Hockey Place, the fans flooded the arena with hats in response.  Sidney Crosby also assisted on this goal.  The line of Crosby, Iginla, and Nash showed tremendous chemstry during this game.

I heard something about one of Jarome Iginla's goals being credited to Rick Nash. Might not be a hat trick for Iggy.

Team Canada has one of the best teams ever assembled ever. It will be a huge disappointment if they don't win gold. There's not really any identifiable weakness on the team itself, but anything can happen in this type of tournament.

Yup this was a close one...
Gotta say Canada looked REALLY good in the 2nd half of the game. Doughty and Richards looked like they might be difference makers.

Hey Fantasy Hockey, yeah the game against Norway was closer that it should have been early on.
