Team Canada defeats Team Switzerland in group 'A' at the men's Olympic Hockey Tournament

First, there are two implications of tonight's shootout win against Team Switzerland.  Ultimately, if Team Canada is able to defeat Team USA in the next game, it won't affect them advancing to the quarter finals.  The top four ranked teams after the preliminaries receive a bye to the quarter finals while the remaining 8 teams compete for one of the remaining four quarter final positions.

However, this close game against Team Switzerland might portend some difficulties down the road for Team Canada when they play against the top-ranked teams in the tournament.  As well, with Team Canada winning in the shootout instead of regulation time, they are credited with 2 points instead of the usual 3 points in this tournament format for the win.

Sidney Crosby scored the clutch shootout goal for Team Canada on his second attempt while Martin Brodeur made four of four saves in the shootout for Team Canada's win.

Team Canada was unable to register a single shot on net following two power play opportunites in the first period.  Team Switzerland utilized an aggressive penalty kill with pressure on the points.

Dany Heatley opened the scoring for Canada at 9:21 during the game which was assisted by Patrick Marleau and Jonathan Toews.  Heatley received a pass on his skate and beat Hiller with a quick shot.

During the game, they noted that the players on Team Canada average 6'2" in height while weighing an average of 210 pounds.  In contrast, the players on Team Switzerland average just 6'0 and 193 lbs.

The first period ended with a score of 1-0 for Team Canada who also lead 17-8 in terms of shots on net.

second_period

Patrick Marleau scored Canada's second and only additional goal during regulation on the power play.  Mike Babcock was leaning heavily on the Shark line of Patrick Marleau, Dany Heatley, and Joe Thornton during their power play opportunities.  Dany Heatley help Team Canada control the puck after winning a faceoff in Switzerland's zone.  He passed the puck back to the point to Shea Weber who managed to get a shot on net.  Patrick Marleau banged in Weber's rebound for the goal.

Switzerland got on the scoreboard with a goal from Ruthemann assisted by Pluss and Peterlini.  The goal came after Drew Doughty gave the puck away at the offensive zone blue line.  He was benched for that mistake until late in the third period.

Switzerland tied the game at 19:50 in the second period.  They had Team Canada on their heels for the tail end of the second frame.  Chris Pronger took a retaliation penalty in corner of Team Canada's zone.  While continuing to look lost and out of the play, Chris Pronger was no where to be found when Von Gutten scored during the delayed penalty.  Monnet and Furrer assisted on the goal.  Really, it was an unlucky break for Team Canada as the puck hit Patrick Marleau's leg and deflected into the net.

Jarome Iginla took a head shot during the second period which wasn't called.  He sat out of the game until later in the third period.

The shot totals were 10-9 in favor of Team Canada during the second period.

Sidney Crosby received a high stick from Andres Ambuhl after a faceoff in Switzerland's zone.  No call was made on the infraction, but Crosby went to the bench to have his bleeding nose packed.

Team Canada was largeley outplayed again for the third period.  Like much of the second period, they were unable to generate many scoring chances.  On the few that they did create, Jonas Hiller made some outstanding saves.

Speaking of Hiller, he absolutely stoned Cory Perry and Ryan Getzlaf on the same play.  Dany Heatley had a chance to score from the backdoor, but he was denied by the athletic Hiller who made it over to the other side of his net for a brilliant save.

Team Canada was unable to convert on a power play with 2:51 left in the third period.  The final frame of regulation was scoreless thought Team Canada outshout Switzerland 18-3.

The five minutes of overtime playing 4v4 also was scoreless with Team Switzerland out shooting Canada 3-1 in extra minutes.  The final shot total was 46-23 for Team Canada.

Hey T.Gamauf, thanks for the feedback.

Wow, Team Russia lost to Team Slovakia yesterday in a shootout. That's crazy. Here's one of my comments before the game from the OHB forum,

I think that Team Slovakia could offer some surprises at the Olympics--well not on the level of a Gold Medal upset, but they could cause problems for some of the better teams.

I hadn't heard that Russia lost, wow. It just goes to show that in these team events, anything can happen. A hot goalie is all that is required to dispose of the Canadas and Russias of the world.

I am not totally confused about the quarter final matchups. I have tickets to the 9pm game and assumed I would be seeing Russia as the #1 seed out of their group. It is a convoluted schedule, but Russia could meet Sweden or Canada in the quarter if they end up second in their group.
