Oilers lose to Flames 6-1

The Calgary Flames defeated the Edmonton Oilers by a score of six to one at the Pengrowth Saddledome tonight.  With this win, the Flames snap a nine-game losing streak while sweeping the season series against the Oilers with six-consecutive wins.  For the Oilers they've now have a baker's dozen (13) consecutive losses which approaches their franchise record set in 1993-4 in which they lost 14 games (13 losses, 1 tie).

It was a four point night for Jarome Iginla with 2 goals and 2 assists while Dustin Boyd also had two goals, but only a single helper.  Jarome Iginla also had a Gordie Howe hat trick which included his third period figtht against Sheldon Souray.  Dan Tencer's just reported via twitter that Sheldon Souray fractured his wrist presumably in the fight with Ignila.

If losing every game in this season series against the Flames wasn't embarrassing enough or losing by a score of 6-1, then the icing on the cake is that the Oilers have now won just a single game in their past 20.  What's worse is that Sheldon Souray's name was circulated in NHL trade rumors.  With this injury, the slight chance that he might get traded prior to the March 3rd NHL trade deadline is over.  By the way, Google image search is great for finding pictures.  However, try using it to find one of an Oilers fan...  It's pretty funny since you probably won't find one.

Oilers - The baker's dozen losses

Even for the the ardent supports of the Dive 4 Five or Fall 4 Hall, this was a game that every Oilers fan wanted to see their team win.  That the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Chicago Blackhawks (4-2) today afforded the Oilers a seven-point margin in the race for a draft lottery pick.

With Sam Gagner tying the game with a laser of a shot in the first period while the Oilers on the power play, the game's momentum had shifted to the Oilers' favor.  However, it would once against be the Oilers' captain, Ethan Moreau, who took a delayed slashing penalty in the offensive zone, which lead to Calgary's second goal of the game.  It's with a sense of pure bewilderment to Oilers fans why Ethan Moreau is able to continue taking offensive zone penalties at the worst possible time with impunity from the coaching staff.  If I had to guess, it might be a pathetic attempt to try to preserve his trade value.  He's not going anywhere other than hopefully retirement anyway.

From that point onward, it was all downhill for the Oilers culminating in a shooting gallery for the Flames in the third period with even McGratten getting in on the scoring chances.

Devan Dubnyk once again was lit up with  six goals against on 30 shots for an .800 save percentage on the night.  He has little help from the team playing in front of him especially when Sheldon Souray turned the puck over for Dustin Boyd's second goal of the game.  However, he was terribly outplayed by Kipprusoff.

If getting completely embarrassed with this loss to the Flames wasn't enough, Sheldon's Souray's broken wrist just makes things that much worse for Oilers fans.

From the Lowetide blog, here's some Oilers fans' reactions to this loss:

Bruce:

Memo to Daryl Katz: Your team fucking sucks. Do something about it.

RiversQ:

I think this is a great result. Getting swept in the Battle of Alberta to the tune of 6-1 on HNIC on Hockey Day is pretty much maximum embarrassment. I'm not sure what it will take, but surely that checked off some kind of box.

Godot10:

On the positive side, Tambellini now knows he doesn't have to offer Deslauriers a contract, and he can safely offer Dubnyk a two-way deal, and not worry about somebody claiming him off waivers next year when they send him to the minors.

Rick:

I have to be a masochist for not turning this off yet.
Our defense blows. Trade all of them..

PunjabOil:

Congratulations Oilers. You went an entire month without winning a single hockey game.

Pete:

It's bewildering how bad they are. And it's truly amazing how many of the players don't seem to give a shit, at all.  This is worse than those early-mid 90s editions.

Watching an Oilers game start to finish is a grim test of endurance, like one of those native rituals where a young warrior has sharp sticks pierced into his chest and is left in the hot sun for days. It seems like the clock is running backwards.
