| Oilers Recall Taylor Chorney Today, the Edmonton Oilers GM, Steve Tambellini, announced that Taylor Chorney has been recalled from their AHL affiliate, the Springfield Falcons. Taylor Chorney last played for the Oilers in the NHL back on November 8, 2009 prior to going on the Oilers injury reserve due to an ankle injury. This season, Taylor Chorney has played 13 NHL games registering just one assist for a total of a single point with a +/- rating of minus 6. His NHL total includes 15 games played again with a single assist, but with a +/- rating of minus 10. In Springfield last season, Chorney played 68 games registering five goals and sixteen assists for a total of 21 points. However, he was a team-worst -29 for his plus/minus rating. This season in Springfied. Chorny has four goals and five assists in 21 games. Again, he leads the Falcons with a team worst -15 rating among defensemen. However, Chorney has improved over his past ten games with 1 goal, 2 assists, and a +/- of -2. In contrast, Chorney had 3 goals, 3 assists, and a -13 rating in his first ten games played in the AHL this season. Steve Staios has been out of the Oilers lineup since January 18 due to a minor concussion. Further, Ladislav Smid is unlikely to play in tomorrow's game vs. the Dallas Stars. Last night, Smid left the game following a hit from Mason Raymond. It's possible that he suffered a concussion from the hit. The Oilers host the Dallas Stars tomorrow night at Rexall Place. The game is scheduled to start at 7:00 pm mountain time. Despite his shaky plus/minus numbers, the Edmonton Oilers scouting staff seem to love Chorney. Given that the focus of the Oilers season has shifted to player development, it's good to see Chorney get some more playing time in the NHL this season though some might question why the Oilers did not recall Theo Peckham instead. Chorney has fairly average foot speed for a smaller defenseman from what I've seen this season (in the NHL). Clearly, his strengths in the minors are on the power play and primarily involve his strong passing ability.
