| Oilers Seeing Stars... Opponent's blog: The Other 6 Seconds. Game 50: Edmonton Oilers vs. Dallas Stars - Rexall Place - 7:00 PM MT - SportsNet West The Edmonton Oilers (16-27-6) host the Dallas Stars (21-18-11) tonight at Rexall Place. For the Oilers who've already been knocked out of this year's play off race, they must feel like they're seeing stars. Yet for Oilers fans who've watched their team win one game in the past 17, they might not feel like they're seeing any stars on ice. Even Dustin Penner who had a hot start to this season, has just one point in his past five games (a goal) along with a minus five rating. Over his past ten games, Dustin Penner has just two goals, one assist, and a minus 7 rating. The Oilers have defeated the Stars in their two previous games this seasons, both times in shootout wins. In game 2, the Oilers won by a score of five to four while in game 29, Shawn Horcoff scored the shootout winner for a final score of three to two. Follow the jump for the pre-game rant, projected lineup, and stats comparison. Rexall Place - Oilers neck-in-neck in race for last place with Carolina Last night, the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Atlanta Thrashers by a score of five to two inching them within one point in the standings with the Oilers. The Oilers record over their past ten games is 1-7-2 while the Hurricanes have an even 5-5-0 record. The Oilers should find themselves at the bottom of the league before the Olympic break. The NHL break will begin after February 14th and should provide an exciting distraction for Oilers fans. The Oilers will be playing tonight without Ladislav Smid or Steve Staios, both of whom suffered recent concussion injuries. As well, Gilbert Brule is expected to be out of the lineup recovering from the flu. Yesterday, Pat Quinn noted that Ryan Stone might go on LTIR due to residual pain from the meniscus tear in his knee. Mike Comrie hasn't returned from his recent bout of mono, but he has started practicing with the team. With recent injuries to Smid and Staios, the Oilers have recalled Taylor Chorney from the AHL. Key injuries for the Dallas Stars include Brenden Morrow (upper body injury), Mike Ribero (throat), and Jere Lehtinen (upper body injury). For the Stars, both goaltending and defense have been issues this season. Though Marty Turco hasn't been getting the job done this season, the Oilers might find his .905 save percentage and 2.84 goals against average somewhat enviable. The Stars are playing back-to-back games tonight. Despite this, the money line favors the Stars by a small margin (-120/+100). The Stars have struggled to win on the road this season, so the Oilers might be just what the doctor ordered. Special teams and faceoff stats are fairly mediocre for the Stars who's numbers are similar in range to the Oilers. Thanks to the Puttin' on the foil blog, every time I see the Slap Chop Commercial, I think "tacos, fettucini, linguine, martini, Stortini, bikini..." I noticed that the Oilers have scored the second least goals in the conference and have allowed the second most. Not a recipe for any sort of hope.
Who has scored the fewest you ask? I'll give you three guesses...
Nope... St Louis has scored 132, 2 more than the Oil.
Nope... Columbus has scored 140
Nope, but good guess...Minnesota has actually scored 144.
The team with the least goals scored thus far is Detroit, with 129. This after leading the league by about 20 goals last year and being 2nd the year before. Amazingly they have now just snuck into the #8 spot in the standing, ahead of the Flames.
