It was the best of times... it was the worst of times... The Colorado Avalanche serve the Oilers some humble pie after lighting Deslauriers's lamp all night long. If you're an Oilers fan you can either choose to hang your head low in the ignominy of this season and tonight's loss or look towards the 'opportunity.' Steve Tambellini, the Oilers GM, has often been quoted referring to "opportunity" along with "the glass half full answer is..." In this case, the opportunity is for the Oilers to flush their management at season's end and to draft high. The glass half full answer is... Taylor Hall, Tyler Seguin, or Cam Fowler.
If you shelled out for the pay-per-view extravaganza tonight, then you're one hell of an Oilers fan. For some, the chance to see Marc Pouliot play in his first NHL game this season just might have been enough of a justifiable reason. Pouliot, a rare right hand center on the Oilers roster, won 8 of 12 faceoffs on the night. He was credited with one hit and was one of the few Oilers to finish the night at a relatively impressive +/- of zero on the night. In total, he played nearly 11 minutes in his fourth game in as many nights.
About the only positive on the night came from looking at the score in Calgary's game vs. San Jose. The Flames lost by a score of 9-1! That's right... Team Alberta was 15-1 against tonight. The Carolina Hurricanes lost as well by a score of 3-2 against the Tampa Bay Lightning which means that we've kept pace with them.
Tonight's game was pretty much over early in the second period. The Avalanche were up 2-0 after the first period with goals from John-Michel Liles and Matt Duchene. Duchene scored the Avs' first power play goal against the Oilers this season on a 5v3 power play. He has another goal in the third period. Chris Stewart scored in the second and added a power play goal in the third period. Overall, the Oilers were outshot by a margin of ten on the night (34-24).
Several Oilers had pretty rough nights including Souray who looked lost in his zone, Smid, Strudwick, and Deslauriers. Deslauriers himself posted a .825 save percentage in this game. Shawn Horcoff finished the night at just a -1 in terms of his plus/minus stat. It wasn't enough to take top spot on the leader board as he's still 2nd last in the NHL at minus 22 (behind Rod Brind'Amor).
BTW, what's your favorite catch-phrase for the upcoming draft relative to the Oilers? Dive 4 five? Don't win for Seguin? Tank for Taylor? Forfeit for Fowler? Capitulate for Cam? Fall short for Fowler? Sacrifice for Seguin? Fall for Hall?
Are there any top prospects named Ed? I like shxt the bed for Ed.

Hey Admiral,
"Pack it in for Seguin" is just mint. I'm lovin' it!

Jonathan, I'm not sure that there's an Ed, I'll have to look further down the draft rankings. It is certainly "a lot of pain for uncertain gain" given the Oilers salary cap situation next season. As well, we're stuck with the Khabibulin contract which is a huge albatross.
If we start next season with an injury prone Bulin and one of our two mediocre goalie prospects (Dubnyk/Deslauriers), it won't be a good thing even if we draft Taylor Hall.
Lowetide seems to like Tyler Seguin out of the trio of Fowler, Seguin, and Hall. On that note, "Pack it in for Seguin" has a nice ring to it.
I hate to say this, because it feels like kicking a puppy when he's down, but that Oil performance last night reminded me A LOT of the '08-'09 Avs.
But we did get Matt Duchene and Ryan O'Reilly out of it, so it wasn't all bad, in retrospect. But at the time it was excruciating.

Hey Jibble, thnx for your thoughts. It has been an excruciatingly painful season for Oilers fans.
I'm not entirely optimistic, but here's to hoping that the Oilers dump some salary, solve their goaltending problems, acquire some cheap roster vets, and pick a top three draft to rebound next season.
