The People’s GM- Evaluating the Denis Gresbeshkov trade

I made a comment on the site this morning that as the People's GM, I was none too happy with the Oilers trade of Grebeshkov to the Nashville Predators for a 2nd round pick in next year's draft.

In this installment of the People's GM, I am going to evaluate our defensive defensemen.  Perhaps more accurately stated, I will evaluate those D-men that do not have much of an offensive game.

Game Preview:  Team Canada vs. Team USA - 2010 Vancouver Olympic preliminary round - Canada Hockey Place - 5:30 PM MT - CBC

Team Canada (1-0-1-0) will play Team USA (2-0-0-0) tonight at Canada Hockey Place in Vancouver.  With the current tournament format, it's the last preliminary game for both teams.  The winner of this game will get a bye to quarter finals while the loser will have to compete for one of the four remaining quarter final spots.

Team Canada dispatched Team Norway by a score of 8-0.  However, Team Canada was forced into a shootout by Team Switzerland, narrowly escaping with only 2 of 3 possible points with the winning shootout goal from Sidney Crosby.  From this game alone, it's clear that anything can happen with this type of tournament format.  As well, despite looking like one of the best teams ever assembled on paper, Team Canada struggled against a squad with just two regular NHL players.  Will this be a wake up call for Team Canada or is it a sign that Team Canada isn't as good on the ice as it is on paper?

Team Canada defeats Team Switzerland in group 'A' at the men's Olympic Hockey Tournament

First, there are two implications of tonight's shootout win against Team Switzerland.  Ultimately, if Team Canada is able to defeat Team USA in the next game, it won't affect them advancing to the quarter finals.  The top four ranked teams after the preliminaries receive a bye to the quarter finals while the remaining 8 teams compete for one of the remaining four quarter final positions.

However, this close game against Team Switzerland might portend some difficulties down the road for Team Canada when they play against the top-ranked teams in the tournament.  As well, with Team Canada winning in the shootout instead of regulation time, they are credited with 2 points instead of the usual 3 points in this tournament format for the win.

Sidney Crosby scored the clutch shootout goal for Team Canada on his second attempt while Martin Brodeur made four of four saves in the shootout for Team Canada's win.

Oilers' Nikolai Khabibulin charged with DUI and speeding in Arizona

Nikolai Khabibulin Arrested in Arizona

Edmonton Oiler, Nikolai Khabibulin, was charged with driving under the influence after being pulled over for speeding.  Though he was arrested on February 8th, the news of this charge didn't surface until it was reported by an Arizona blog:  Khabibulin Arrested.  For the Edmonton Oilers organization, it's another PR nightmare following the incident at the Osteria de Medici restaurant on New Years Eve.

Khabibulin, 37,  had season ending back surgery on a herniated disc on January 14, hadn't played for the Oilers since November 16th, 2009.  This past summer, Oilers GM, Steve Tambellini signed Khabibulin to a 4-year contract worth $15 million dollars.

According to reports, Khabibulin consented to both a Field Sobriety Test along with a blood test to determine his blood alcohol levels.  He failed the Field Sobriety Test and was cited with a blood alcohol level of .08 or more along with speeding charges.

Game 1 Recap:  Team Canada defeats Team Norway 8-0 at the 2010 Olympics - Mens Olympic Hockey

Team Canada's men's Olympic Hockey team defeated Team Norway by a score of 8-0 in a dominating performance tonight at Canada Hockey Place in Vancouver.  Jarome Iginla lead Team Canada with a hat trick on the night.  After a surprising scoreless end to the first period, Team Canada opened the flood gates with a power play goal from Jarome Iginla in the second period and the team itself never looked back.

It never ceases to amaze me about the unifying ability of the red maple leaf on a hockey jersey.  Issues such as Heatley not wanting to waive a no-trade clause, Jarome Iginla giving Sheldon Souray a concussion, or even Roberto Luongo just being Luongo are all forgotten when these players step on the ice for Team Canada.

After an uneventful first period, Steve Yzerman and his coaching staff made changes to Team Canada's lines which helped to create some chemistry.  In particular, moving Jarome Iginla up to Crosby's right wing helped get things moving.
